Spotlight on Student TECH CORPS
It
is undeniable that computer skills are requisite for today's students
to both survive and succeed in the global workplace, yet only one-third
of teachers report feeling adequately prepared to incorporate
technology into the classroom. It is also true that most public schools
can use all the technical support they can get. Compared to industry,
which averages fifty users per support technician, the average ratio
for public schools is 500 to one. The Student TECH CORPS program from
TECH CORPS Texas was designed to address both of these issues.
Student TECH CORPS is an opportunity
for schools to increase their tech support capabilities while preparing
students for the technology-driven workforce. It is an Internet
delivered course of study from TECH CORP Texas, a nonprofit 501(c)3
organization based in Houston whose mission is to enhance K-12
education in the crucial area of technology.
The Student TECH CORPS program expands a school's tech support
capabilities by training a core group of students in the basics of
computer maintenance. Students who complete the training are awarded a
Pre-Professional Technology certification qualifying them to join the
elite Student TECH CORPS. These students help expand the capacity of
the school's tech support system by operating a Student-Run Helpdesk
and responding to support requests.
TECH CORPS Texas donates five computers to Technology Without Borders
With
computer technology an essential component of society in the 21st
century, people must have access to computers and the skills to use
them to be successful academically and in the workforce. TECH
CORPS Texas is a non profit organization contributing to meet this
need. The organization refurbishes computers and delivers them to
low-income students and communities in order to help achieve a computer
literate technology society.
Recently,
TECH CORPS Texas (TCTX) refurbished five computers, which were donated
to Technology Without Borders (TWB), a non profit organization run by
students from the University of North Carolina. This is the second year
that TCTX has supplied computers to the TWB project. This year, the
computers went to a community technology center in Piedras Negras,
Mexico. The computers that TECH CORPS Texas supplied were loaded with
the Kubuntu Linux operating system and Open Office. The computers are
now providing valuable opportunities that will greatly impact community
educational achievement and professional and personal development.
